STEM education- meaning and benefits

Meaning

STEM education is defined as the preparation of students in competencies and skills in the four disciplines (science, technology, engineering, and math). A successful STEM education provides students with science, math, and engineering/technology in sequences that build upon each other and can be used with real-world applications.

This approach to education is designed to revolutionize the teaching of subject areas such as mathematics and science by incorporating technology and engineering into regular curriculum by creating a “meta-discipline.” Also, STEM Education attempts to transform the typical teacher-centered classroom by encouraging a curriculum that is driven by problem-solving, discovery, exploratory learning, and require students to actively engage a situation in order to find its solution.

Benefits

All students will get huge benefits from the STEM program because it teaches independent innovation and allows students to explore greater depths of all of the subjects by utilizing the skills learned; these skills are going to be required in order for today’s students to be tomorrow’s global leaders.

STEM education creates critical thinkers, increases science literacy, and enables the next generation of innovators. Innovation leads to new products and processes that sustain our economy. This innovation and science literacy depends on a solid knowledge base in the STEM areas. Seeing this scenario of today and tomorrow, it has been suggested in U.S to make STEM education a top priority.

With a view of children seeing the advancements in their generations as we are seeing in our generation, it is important that they have a well-balanced education that includes STEM elements, as well as, traditional classes in the Arts. STEM education is designed to teach the “whole” student and in turn will make them more successful members of society.

Education has become a business- high fees and low quality of education

“Education is more than a luxury; it is a responsibility that society owes to itself,” says Robin Cook, an American novelist. But in this today’s era, are we moving away from our responsibility towards education that Cook talks about? Perhaps, yes because education has become a business these days.

Today, it has become a common scenario to see students and their parents struggling for arranging money to pay lakhs of fees for the student’s education. This is what the real scenario of our today’s education system is. While on the one hand, the fee structure of schools and colleges are rising immensely, on the other hand, the quality of education is also deteriorating at a very high speed. The institutions are engaged just in earning profits for themselves.

The Home Minister, P Chidambaram, at the closing ceremony marking 150 years of St. Xavier’s College, said, “I believe that private participation in higher education is important for the spread of education but I am strictly against private business with education.”

In this “business” of education, the fees of various institutions are already rising but let us now ascertain that why and how the quality of education is declining.

If we talk about various schools, today, with more number of schools competition has increased a lot. Each school just wants to be on the top when it comes to ranking. Due to this many schools these days have started adopting a tendency of focusing more on intelligent students. Due to this over emphasis on intelligent students, the average and below average students lag behind as they hardly get any chance to improve themselves.

The ways of business have also been sought out in education by admitting more than fifty students in one class. In these ways of earning more money the proper education of children does not get imparted and the basics of the students remain weak.

Now, if we talk about education at the college level, all of us know that there are hardly any studies that happen in college. Lecturers come and deliver their lecture without any creativity and innovation due to which the students do not get proper knowledge of their subjects and due to this they take help of various keys and guides to pass the examination. Also, if knowledge is imparted it is imparted strictly with the examination point of view. In this way, though students score well in examinations, they get left behind of the practical knowledge due to which they suffer when they go for their jobs.

Thus, to conclude, a need is there to take strict measures to stop this business in education. If it will not be reduced now, the quality of education in India will deteriorate further and as already the quality of our higher education in India is low as compared to other countries, it will become very difficult for us to meet the world standards.

RAGGING a menace to education

There came an era around 2000-2009 in education and educational institutions when ragging was at its peak. All kinds physical and sexual harassments were inflicted on students by their seniors. This menace became so rampant that many students started becoming mentally disturbed and many students were forced to their death. According to the statistics available, a total of 31 deaths (due to ragging) were reported from 2001-07 and 19 deaths were reported in the year 2009 alone.
These statistics are frightening. Many measures have been taken by the government up till now at different levels to curb ragging. Today, ragging is strictly banned in all the institutions and is reckoned as a ‘criminal offence’. Though ragging has reduced a lot, it is still prevalent in some of the institutions. But a question arises, “what is it that forces us to become so inhuman that we become so ignorant to others’ pain?”
All these cases of ragging are a great menace to education and show our insensitivity towards humanity. All these cases of ragging question the very nature of education. Is this what education teaches us, to inflict pain on others and that too so deeply that one is forced to commit suicide? Does not it question the very meaning of education that we do to become good human beings in society? Is this what is called a human being? Certainly NOT!
In a true sense, ragging is a way which enables us to interact with our seniors in a healthy manner. Seniors are meant to help their juniors in the initial days of college as they (seniors) are the ones who can understand the anxieties of the new students as they (seniors) were at their place once. But many of the seniors, instead, show their insensitivity towards them and try to make their life tough. This is certainly an awful situation.
The time has come when students must understand the concepts of ‘basic humanity’, ‘primal sympathy’ and ‘mutual respect’. These are the basic tenets of a human being. All these things in us make our education meaningful and do not allow things like ‘ragging-a menace to education’ to come up as such horrendous cases of ragging are a question on our humanity.

Can thinking big lead to success?

Today’s competitive era is an era where one can achieve big targets in life only if one has the power to think big. Even in the earlier times, many big entrepreneurs like Dhirubhai Ambani and Ratan Tata would not have been what they are now if they did not have ‘big thinking’. Therefore, there is no doubt that ‘thinking big’ does lead to success.
In the previous times, people used to get satisfied by whatever they got. They did not have the courage to think big and hence, their success was limited. But today, the time is changing. Today, we can see passionate youngsters full of zest and exuberance thinking big and aiming high. Today, every little child wants to become Ratan Tata, Saina Nehwal and Sachin Tendulkar. All these names of big personalities answer the question ‘can thinking big lead to success?’ with a definite ‘yes’. This is certainly a positive change that our society is going through.
But the major problem lies in the follow up. According to a survey, today, among the people who think big, around 75% of the respondents are not able to follow up their thinking in that direction. Many people come in your way and try to restrain your big dreams with their small thinking. But you think big and make yourself believe that the work can certainly be done. Do not engage in quarrel. Think big and restrain yourself of the temptation to engage in altercation. Do not get de-motivated and be a progressive thinker.
But a question arises, what is it in ‘thinking big’ that leads to success? Firstly, ‘big thinking’ and ‘high dreams’ instills in you a positive approach towards life and takes away all the negativities which is very relevant for success. Secondly, it fills you with immense confidence, passion and zest to achieve your goals. This passion and burning fire in you force you to move towards your success.
To conclude, ‘thinking big’ can definitely lead to success. It fills you with right amount of zest, passion and positivity and takes you on the path of success.
