RAGGING a menace to education

There came an era around 2000-2009 in education and educational institutions when ragging was at its peak. All kinds physical and sexual harassments were inflicted on students by their seniors. This menace became so rampant that many students started becoming mentally disturbed and many students were forced to their death. According to the statistics available, a total of 31 deaths (due to ragging) were reported from 2001-07 and 19 deaths were reported in the year 2009 alone.

These statistics are frightening. Many measures have been taken by the government up till now at different levels to curb ragging. Today, ragging is strictly banned in all the institutions and is reckoned as a ‘criminal offence’. Though ragging has reduced a lot, it is still prevalent in some of the institutions. But a question arises, “what is it that forces us to become so inhuman that we become so ignorant to others’ pain?”

All these cases of ragging are a great menace to education and show our insensitivity towards humanity. All these cases of ragging question the very nature of education. Is this what education teaches us, to inflict pain on others and that too so deeply that one is forced to commit suicide? Does not it question the very meaning of education that we do to become good human beings in society? Is this what is called a human being? Certainly NOT! 

In a true sense, ragging is a way which enables us to interact with our seniors in a healthy manner. Seniors are meant to help their juniors in the initial days of college as they (seniors) are the ones who can understand the anxieties of the new students as they (seniors) were at their place once. But many of the seniors, instead, show their insensitivity towards them and try to make their life tough. This is certainly an awful situation.

The time has come when students must understand the concepts of ‘basic humanity’, ‘primal sympathy’ and ‘mutual respect’. These are the basic tenets of a human being. All these things in us make our education meaningful and do not allow things like ‘ragging-a menace to education’ to come up as such horrendous cases of ragging are a question on our humanity.
